Who Knew?
So when I got to work today I made a startling discovery. I apparently don’t get paid enough. This was all quite shocking to me because I have always been under the impression that you should find what you love doing and trust that God will take care of the money thing. Not so according to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Oh no, for him the current $212,000 he makes is not nearly enough. In fact, it is so little that he believes we are facing a Judicial pay crisis! How did the media drop the ball on this one! See, apparently, things have gotten so bad for the men in black (robes that is) that they are fleeing their judicial appointments like cats from water. Now, I will admit that the numbers he quotes do point to people leaving their judge appointments to accept more lucrative positions as consultants, school deans, and professorships. The thing that just gets me though, is the nerve it takes for a rich white guy with a job he will have till the day he dies to start bitching and moaning about how he doesn’t get paid enough. What does he need to save for? Retirement? Please. My plan, for when I become ruler of the universe, is to cut salaries of all public servants to a more reasonable level. Currently I would say that is somewhere around $50,000/year. I would also make their raises subject to either independent arbitration or public vote. You want a raise? How about you actually accomplish the things people put you in office to do. Furthermore, I believe government would be immensely improved if the people who were there were there to actually serve the public, not line their pockets with tax dollars. I know this doesn’t fix everything that is wrong with the government but coming from Washington state where the legislature gives itself raises and then closes schools and libraries due to lack of funds, I’m just a little bit bitter.
Service is something that I hold very dear to my heart. As a Christian I believe that it is my job to do what God has called me to and let him worry about providing for my needs. Do I have the well paying jobs that my engineering or accounting friends have? No, but I believe I have been blessed with everything I need to be happy. Church yesterday was about remembering that we are not, as Christians, to always be looking into the future for the Kingdom of God because it is already here! Sure, Revelation and all that end of the world stuff is out there someday, but we often forget that we already live in God’s Love. It is very easy to withdraw from the world and take on a victim mentality while we wait but that is not the live God has called us too. He has not called all of us to live uber-rich lives of blush luxury, he has called us to be good, loving people and let him take care of the rest. Something that John Roberts seems to have forgotten.
