Why I should be a teacher. . .
Wow, could that be more painful to watch? I don’t care if I ended up teaching drama, I would grill my students on geography. To answer the question that Miss Teen South Carolina absolutely blundered, the reason 20% of American’s can’t find the US on a map is not because they don’t have maps (though that could be part of the problem) it’s that they never had a teacher pound it into their heads. I’m sure they’ve all seen maps of the US before but how many had to actually do “geoquizes?” Granted, probably not everyone was like me growing up where they would flip through the pages of a world atlas when the got bored (or read wikipedia like I do today) but there is no reason for the level of ignorance most American’s display when it comes to world geography and events. I was blown away my senior year when I was standing near to a couple of Freshmen who suddenly discovered Sudan. I wondered if they knew that this mystery country they found is the site of one of the worst modern day cases of persecution of Christians and genocide/ethnic cleansing. So maybe in the classroom is where I’m supposed to be. . .
